Tips On How To Sell Your Timeshare

Timeshares are fun to own, but when you need money for anything, having to sell your timeshare is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Doing so is simple and using the right agent, making the sale can be easy and pain free. If you are in fact thinking of selling it, keep the following items in mind.

A person selling their timeshare should never have to pay anything upfront. Some agents are not legitimate timeshare agents and they will attempt to get the owner to pay a fee upfront. As soon as the owner pays the fee, the agent disappears, never to be heard form again. These “agents” are typically scam artists and before they have been caught, they have disappeared with the money and he owner generally never recovers it. Any fees paid to an agent should be taken as a commission only and comes out at the sale’s closing.

Always know what the average value of your timeshare week or weeks in comparison to others. This way you can get the most from selling it. The best way to do this is make a comparison to other weeks in the same area on other properties in addition to calculating the value of other weeks in the same property yours is located in.

Additionally, note the season your week takes place in because for those timeshares that are summer homes, a summer week could alter the value drastically as compared to other weeks of the year. Assessing the value prior to searching for an agent will also help in selecting an agent to sell your week by weeding out those who are searching for top dollar when your week may only be worth half as much.

If you ever think, “I want to sell my timeshare,” always know the facts, fees and regulations upfront in order to minimize any risk you may occur. Timeshares can be fun, but when you want you want to sell, many people claiming to be who they are not will try to take advantage using scams, above value pricing and trying to make you pay for something you should not have to pay for. Be prepared by educating yourself so that you can sell your timeshare the right way.

Ha, I got roped into a timeshare presentation in Las Vegas. Glad I resisted the hard sell. This is good info for folks who weren't able to -- and man, it is a hard sell!

Several years ago someone donated a time share to the non-profit organization I work for and I was given the task of selling it. You wouldn't believe how much time I put into that project. It was one of the biggest headaches I've ever had to deal with. In the end, we ended up giving it away. I'm no fan of time shares any longer.
